Outlaw Thoughts: What about the fifth horseman? Misinformation.

Published on October 6th, 2021

In this episode the Alaska Outlaw cuts loose with an opinion piece about the rise of the fifth horseman of the apocalypse, misinformation.  With the global influence of the misinformation highway, or social media, we find ourselves inundated with tidbits of data aimed at misdirecting the reader/listener. When broaching the subject of misinformation, the top two sources: news radio, and mainstream news. Although we’ve covered it before, just a reminder, those two sources are biding for followers, or “paying customers” who are willing to listen to their information. I would be willing at this point to submit that there is 100 times more fake news than there is real news.

Alright, time to hit the old mail bag.

Myrna from North Carolina asks “how can I determine what is legitimate news, versus misleading garbage?”

Tom from Texas asks “what is the real reason for all the fake news?”

Sandy from Montana asks “without the local news, how do I know what’s happening in my area?”

David from New York asks “who’s to say that you yourself is not feeding us false information?”

Randy from Iowa asks “are all opinions pretty much useless?”

Toby from Nevada adds “Don’t famous people have a legal liability when producing information for public consumption?”

Great questions to all those who sent them in. If I didn’t get to your question, sorry about that, but don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll touch on this topic again as its really relevant to a requirement for survival.

So, for those of you who may have just recently dialed in, this weeks episode is an “Outlaw Thoughts” show where I voice my opinion about a particular topic. Now moms and dads, no need to fear about hurting anyones sensibilities here, it’s only my opinion.  Now, all kidding aside, we’ve covered the basic principles here, so I’ll just talk about that fifth horseman of the apocalypse. Misinformation.

Really there are two major threads of misinformation:

  1. Purposely misguiding the public for political or economic gain.
  2. Inadvertently misguiding the public.

These two schools of thought play out thousands of time every day. With certain groups attempting to sway public opinion, while the other groups attempts to sway the other way. Same facts, different presentation, leading to a very different outcome of opinions. With the onus of fact checking left to the end-users or consumers of the information.

The most important factor when considering any data point is the context of the statement it was presented in. Modern news outlets are famous for taking sound bites from interviews of persons, then portraying them out of context to an audience, sometimes they may imply other meanings. The reality here is that comments must be presented in context of how they were presented, as by changing the context can completely change the interpretation. This is where many of the messages transferred via news channels are somewhat twisted to meet the desires of the station management. Almost anything can be translated in a multitude of ways, all depending on the context in which it was presented.

Before I get too far down this road, I want to say that I do not want you to listen to my opinion as gospel. You need to research the topic yourself, but whatever you do, don’t get your news from social media. Not at all.

Politics

  •   Democrats vs Republicans – the problem I see here is that there are a limited number of people who are willing and able to contradict their elected officials. With the lion’s share of society “washing their hands of the whole process”, like sending a sacrificial lamb, not realizing that they just elected another millionaire. Ultimately it really doesn’t matter whether they are an elephant or a donkey, the reality is, for the most part, they are left unsupervised by their constituents. They all immediately start accepting kickbacks, and voting themselves a pay raise, until their are forced out by their voters… which by the way, is you.
  •   Conservative vs Progressive – this one is a little more necessary as I personally feel as if there needs to be a balance between what works, and trying new things. This is where those “old white guys” club really gets to be a pain in the ass. We need to understand that the United States has changed in the last 270+ years, get over that fact and govern in the here and now.  The problem here is that the new progressive stuff needs to be tempered as well. Rome wasn’t built in a day. By addressing the issues, we need to take the extra time to draw a step-by-step map from where we are, to where we need to be. Then move that direction together, as a nation. As a people.

Coronavirus – oh hell yea, the misinformation around this one absolutely shocks me. The people who are spouting this bullshit are intelligent people, yet absolutely disbelieve natural sciences. I am amazed at the stupidity that people get sucked into around this virus. I mean honestly, from 2002 – 2004, the world was struck with COVID19’s big brother SARS. Ok, so only 770+ people died from it, but I bet the southeast Asian population would disagree with it being a hoax with approximately 8500 people getting infected. For those of you who didn’t graduate the 6th grade, but can still make gin in the bathtub, SARS was technically COVID03, meaning “corona”, “virus”, “2003”. And no, it was a biological warfare weapon dry-run. Although honestly, if it had been, they would have won.

As far as this being a hoax being perpetuated by the new media, as I have witnessed first-hand the physically exhausted medical staff, and the death and destruction caused by this infection, those who doubt this, are absolutely clueless. Go volunteer at a hospital in your area if you done believe.

  • Mask mandates – mask mandates are not an attack on anyones liberties. They are simply stronger encouragement to not cough or sneeze in someone else’s mouth. They simply corral your freedom to not get vaccinated away from my freedom to live my life. The unfortunate part of this was the social media who promoted the uncertainty in the beginning of the pandemic, thereby politicizing, and polarizing the use of common decency.
  • Vaccine conspiracies – next up in the old list of the stupidest shit I’ve read are the bullshit that has been spread about the vaccines themselves. With the exception of the true morons of the country (anti-vaxers ) we have gotten the necessary vaccines for small pox, diphtheria, along with all the others, just to go to school, yet now that we have a science based DNA level correction to fight this infection, everyone is afraid of needles. Give me a break.
    • Inject trackers – I guess my question here is, do you have any idea of digital electronic theory at all? Oh wait, let me guess, the aliens in Area 51 gave us the technology to develop a battery small enough to fit through the eye of a needle. A battery capable of powering a digital device to constantly broadcast your location via GPS to a satellite, without burning a whole through the skin tissue. Right.
    • Placebo – this is the line people use when you deflate every other ridiculous theory. When they can’t find something else, this is the standard go-to. Ridicules.

Government – the misinformation put across the airwaves about our government could create a series of shows that last forever. It has been going on as long as there have been governments. The fact that governments could be organized enough to stage a great hoax is absolutely mind boggling that someone could actually seriously ponder that.

  • Individual control
  • International Conspiracy

Superiority

  • Racism
  • Sexism

Gun Control

  • Individual rights under attack
  • Mass shootings
    • Staged to take away gun rights
    • Crazy lone wolf shooters

All of these topics have been promoted in an effort to divide the American people by classes, races, and sexes. They have been driven home by the  thousands of media sources in an effort to garner the associated finances to line their owner’s pockets. They could give two shits about the truth. Social media then lends some credence to misinformation by popularizing the “followers” of each articles. The backlash to this is that the main stream media picks it up as news, and due to the lack of fact checking in news today, provide legitimacy to the incorrect facts, the vicious circle continues.

Inadvertently passing on misinformation.

However, honestly there are a ton of things we can do to get this back on track.

Firstly, instead of the instant “news” in your social media, pick up a newspaper. Newspapers are less attracted to volumes (although they need it as well), as they are drawn to making sure they “fact check” the stories they publish. This is a critical component to understanding the world around us. I can’t stress it enough. The idea that the 140 character limits of social media has created a frenzy of half stories and mis-statements due to the lack of repercussions.

Second, is to validate everything! If the social media networks won’t do fact checking, then the onus falls on us to do some fact checking on information received. Do your research. Don’t believe anything you read online, as soon as you receive any information, fact check it right away to ensure you don’t store mis-information. This is where some of this happens as we lose track of why we believe something, and can’t quote a source, but then pass it onto someone else as knowledge. This is part of the problem. At first, we may not hear the whole story, or may hear something out of context, but then, because we don’t fact check it, if someone asks us, we pass along incomplete information.

As always my friends, I am honored and humbled that you have chosen to spend this time listening to me. I deeply appreciate each and every one of you. Being prepared provides each of us with the confidence for successful survival. We mentioned before, and will certainly say again, that survival is a 90% mental task, but that 10% of physical resources is critically important.. By having a confidence and discipline, we can and will survive. Remember to be strong, be safe, and keep your head on a swivel… Peace
