In this episode, we look at the requirements for, the management of, and the recovery from biological warfare in the 21st century. We’ll talk about delivery methods, we’ll include how biological agents get into the body, and most importantly I want to talk about some common sense methods of keeping ourselves safe. With all the misinformation flying sideways around the internet, I thought we might take a moment to discuss the realities of biological warfare in the 21st century. What it might look like, and how effective it would be in this modern-day world. Honestly, we have been witnessing over the last year and a half, how effective a biological agent would be here in the United States. For today’s discussion, I’m not going to cover any nuclear components.
Let’s get this party started, by looking at the old mailbag.

One of the most frustrating points I’ve seen made over the last two years is the effectiveness of a viral delivery system, that most people try to make it all political, by not tolerating a mask, or vaccine mandate. I mean a resistance to wearing a mask to protect against a biological agent, is very contra-indicative and irresponsible. When planning the success of a biological attack, the first step would be to lower the defensive capabilities. Taking off, or refusing to wear a mask, lowers any defensive strategy the body may have. To this point, let’s consider the mechanisms used by these agents to infiltrate the body. If, and I’m not saying it was, but if the dispersal of a biological agent had been behind the worldwide pandemic. Guess what? Y’all died! To me the idea that there are some out that touting survival and freedom out of one side of their mouth, while defying local orders to mask up and vaccinate for those who can’t. The problem is that the proper protection against the virus was made too politicized, thereby rendering real solutions unused.
So, without digging our collective grave over many failures we’ve witness throughout the pandemic, let’s talk about some basic nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) concepts and see where our thinking lies. So the first topic will be how these things get inside us to make us sick. We’ll call them the methods of entry:
- Ingestion, or taking the biological agents in through the digestion system. Now, in my vernacular, I also include all the practices of the body in this one. The general concept is to get into the body. The major difference here between this and inhalation is the lack of a direct access to the blood stream.
- Inhalation, or introducing the biological agent via the oxygen exchange. Either by nose or mouth, the danger here is that the lungs give these agents direct access to the blood stream, which can reduce the life giving oxygen carrying capacity, essentially suffocating the victim. While most people consider this to be the most valuable target method of delivery, alas it is not.
- Absorption is when something comes in contact with our dermis (skin), then works itself through the dermis into the inner body. It enters through the pores of the dermis, and can be far more stealthy in its entrance to the body.
In the general discussion about the methods of entry, my own personal story about this is the story of my own father. My father was a land surveyor in the late sixties, seventies, and into the eighties. We lived in many places throughout the country, but the story boils down to my father having to hack is way through tons of foliage to mark property lines, as well as paths for mighty highways to be built. This extended exposure to the foliage that was sprayed with “Agent Orange”. Agent Orange is a chemical weapon to control the growth of foliage. As mentioned before, chemical droplets, being heavier than air, settle on the leaves, flowers, and ground, being immediately stirred when my dad would push through to chop a path. While he chopped, the chemicals would become airborne again, to be inhaled. Ultimately it would choke out his ability to breathe, by killing off the alveoli in his lungs, meaning no oxygen made it into his bloodstream, thereby killing tissues throughout his body. Real world story there, it ain’t pretty.
With methods of entry out of the way, let’s look at what the overall objective of a biological agent is, and how it differs from a chemical attack.
Firstly, we need to understand that biological agents are alive. While they may have been created in a lab, the idea that they can feed in the wild, multiply and spread is as real as the threat they offer the general population upon their release. As far as the lifecycle for a particular agent, each one is different depending on the composition of the agent itself. In addition, depending on the necessary nutrients in the environment, a particular agent may survive longer, or less than other agents. There are many different environmental factors which may increase or decrease their longevity, as well as their potency.
As I mentioned, biological agents are alive, so a swarm of mosquitos carrying some other payload, such as malaria, would be classified as a biological event. Talk about the swarm of locus in the Christian Bible, another biological event. Some might say the release of the “killer hornets” was a biological event. So, is we stop for just a second to consider the effectiveness of the coronavirus infestation throughout the world, we should quickly get an idea of the stakes at hand here. I mean the COVID-19 infection took like 5.2 million lives (according to the World Heath Organization (WHO)) as of the end of October 2021. I’d say that was fairly successful. What about the next one? Are you going to be as anti-mask for the next one?
Now, while chemicals have a pre-defined dispersal range, they can be carried by wind gusts to cover much larger distances. Eventually, because they are heavier than air, they will settle to the ground. Now, the thing to remember here is that chemical danger lasts longer than most biological agents, obviously depending on the dispersal. Upon settling to whatever surface, they may lay dormant for years, until disturbed. In addition, depending on the chemical composition, there are not vaccines for chemical poisoning. There is anti-dote, but just like a vaccine, antidotes will need to be developed to match the evolving nature of chemical composition.
Infection reduces effectiveness of an individual.

Being prepared provides each of us with the confidence for successful survival. We mentioned before, and will certainly say again, that survival is a 90% mental task, but that 10% of physical resources is critically important..
